🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌We were bananas about this book!

Blurb:

Leonard is shocked when he arrives with his mother in the port of Southampton. His father is a stranger to him, it’s cold and even the Jamaican food doesn’t taste the same as it did back in Maroon Town. But his parents have brought him here to try and make a better life, so Leonard does his best not to complain , to make new friends, to do well at school- even when people hurt him with their words and with their fists

Our review:

Leonard and his family come to live in the UK after WW2 . Leonard can’t see why he has to leave his idyllic home in Jamaica; with its ripe fruit and palm trees to climb. He has to overcome racism and discrimination when he comes to Manchester. We follow his story with sadness, joy and most importantly hope ,which despite the challenges he faces, helps him through. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was written by the renowned poet Benjamin Zephaniah. It is based on historical events and is endorsed by Amnesty International. I would recommend it for 10+ kids.
